Four stand out in Diamond hunt at Victorian PICAs - 21/10/2009
Peter Kohn - Proprint
Four companies scored multiple Diamond awards, the highest accolade, at the Victorian PICAs on Friday night (16 October 2009).
The black-tie awards presentation, staged at the Sofitel On Collins Ballroom in Melbourne, pitted the best companies in Victoria's printing and graphic arts industry against one another in a night of glitter, glamour and colour, hosted by John McNaught, fresh from his master-of- ceremonies role at the Western Australia PICAs.
PMP Print topped the ladder with three Diamond awards, for Web Offset Coated Stock Press Finished, Web Coated Stock Offline Finished, and Web Offset Publications with a Cover Price.
Finsbury Green won two Diamonds, for Leaflets and Folders, and for Multi-Piece Productions & Campaigns.
Bambra Press won Diamonds for Commercial Posters/Showcards and for Digital Printing/Electrophotographic.
Adams Print was also recognised for its work in Booklets, Catalogues & Magazines (Saddlestitched), and for Calendars.
Significantly, the judging panel, headed by Rod Urquhart, did not declare Diamond winners in seven categories - One, Two & Three-Colour Printing, Diecut Presentation Folders, Postcards & Greeting Cards, Packaging, Flexographic Printing, Digital Printing/Inkjet, and Specialty Or Special Printing - reinforcing a policy of discretion that the judges emphasised at last year's Victorian PICAs.
In the sponsored awards, the Heidelberg Excellence in Print accolade went to Blue Star Print for its work on the Les Kossatz book, The Art of Existence.
The Currie Group's prize for Best Use of Photography was claimed by Picpress for The Antarctica Book. Picpress also received a Judges Award for this project.
Pidgeon picked up the Spicers Paper Award for Best Design for its Seven 17 Bourke Twisted Brochure.
McPhersons was recognised for its environmental initiatives, winning the Dalton Paper Environmental Award.
Finally, PMP Print won a Judges Award for its work on the July 2009 issue of Gourmet Traveller.
With the main business of the night over, attendees rocked on to the sounds of Abba tribute band Abbaration.
