New Digital Qualifications feature in Graphic Arts Training Package Briefings - 8/7/2010

A series of free half-day information sessions around Australia have been planned to brief the industry on the new ICP10 Printing and Graphic Arts Training Package.

The sessions will be held in Perth (29 July), Sydney (3 August), Melbourne (19 August), Adelaide (25 August) and Brisbane (31 August). Detailed information including a flyer can be found at the bottom of this newsletter.

As members have been previously advised by Printing Industries National Training Policy Manager, Neal McLary (pictured right), the Printing and Graphic Arts Training Package (which underpins the whole structure of the Industry’s vocational education and training) underwent a significant review during the course of 2009. The review traversed a broad and far reaching range of issues. The outcomes of the review have been finalised and the Printing and Graphic Arts Training Package ICP10 is now in place.

Key outcomes were:

  • A range of new digital printing competencies and the revision of existing competencies;
  • Environmental sustainability competencies incorporated as a core component in every qualification and the incorporation of competitive manufacturing competencies as electives;
  • Digital printing competencies included in the Certificate III in Printing and Graphic Arts (Printing) as elective units;
  • A Certificate II in Printing and Graphic Arts (Digital Printing) and a Certificate III in Printing and Graphic Arts (Digital Printing).

Assessment guidelines have been reviewed to ensure the integrity of qualifications and delivery of industry training.

The enhancement process is a great step forward for training in the Industry. The growth of the digital print sector has been substantial and prior to ICP10 there has been no formal training infrastructure available. While many vendors offered sound training in their product there were no industry standards by which an employer could assess the ability and propensity of an employee or job applicant to perform the duties required by the business.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia will be conducting the free half-day information sessions around Australia to brief the industry on the new ICP10 Printing and Graphic Arts Training Package.

These sessions, will be facilitated by well known industry identity Greg Grace (bottom right), who will outline the competency standards qualifications for the printing and graphics arts industry including the first-time inclusion of competency standards for the digital print sector.

The sessions will cover:

  • Training available for the printing industry, i.e. qualifications.
  • A progress report on modern training methods related to current competencies and qualifications.
  • How Businesses can structure their training/qualifications to meet their commercial needs
  • The current status of Traineeships/Apprenticeships
  • Available funding and incentives.
  • Where-to from here for traditional trade training and relevant qualifications
  • How can training be delivered - where; when and by whom?
